"But Are Your Raincoats Waterproof?"

"But Are Your Raincoats Waterproof?"

"BUT ARE YOUR RAINCOATS WATERPROOF?"

This is a question I get asked often. However, the question should be, "What is the difference between waterproof and water-resistant, and does it really matter for an everyday raincoat?"

Briefly, here is the difference between the two:

WATERPROOF
According to Merriam Webster:

" impervious to water; especially : covered or treated with a material (as a solution of rubber) to prevent permeation by water."

And more specifically, according to Wikipedia (which is admittedly not always a reliable source but adequately expands on the Merriam Webster definition):

"The term "waterproof" refers to conformance to a governing specification[1] and specific conditions of a laboratory test method."

WATER-RESISTANT
"Able to resist the penetration of water to some degree but not entirely."

So, here's my answer:

While our waxed cotton raincoats can stand up to intermittent pouring rain, they are not waterproof.  They are not designed to be worn for long hikes or camping trips where there's a chance of getting caught in squall conditions.

They are, however, highly water-resistant which serves the purpose for most women looking for an everyday raincoat. And because they don't look like a typical raincoat, they are perfect for wearing everyday, rain or shine.
